Energy utilities in the U.S. are making significant strides in educating and engaging their customers about how to better control how much energy they use, the resulting costs they incur and the benefits of shifting their consumption. The case studies collected by the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative spotlight how smart meter/smart grid deployments by these utilities have engaged consumers to enable them to match the energy they use with their needs and lifestyles.


Ameren Illinois is a regulated electric and gas delivery company based in Collinsville, Illinois with a service territory spanning over 43,000 square miles, or about three-quarters of the state. The company delivers energy to about 1.2 million electric customers and 816,000 natural gas customers.

To help consumers find ways to improve comfort, manage usage and reduce costs during COVID-19, Ameren Illinois launched a smart thermostat promotion involving multichannel communications and significant discounts on smart thermostats.

During the one-month promotion, Ameren Illinois provided discounted smart thermostats to over 15,000 customers, with approximately 7,000 customers receiving a free device. An additional 3,000 low-income customers received a free device through the Smart Savers Initiative.

National Grid is one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the United States, serving more than 20 million customers throughout New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Today, National Grid is transforming its electricity and natural gas networks with smarter, cleaner and more resilient energy solutions to meet the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2016, National Grid partnered with EnergySage to develop a customized solar shopping solution for residential customers in the utility’s Rhode Island service territory. The program leveraged EnergySage’s Solar Calculator to provide residential customers with an instant estimate of their homes’ specific solar potential. To date, over 12,000 consumers have sought solar quotes through the Solar Marketplace, and 367 customers have decided to install solar energy systems on their homes.

Download SECC’s Inside the Smart Home Toolkit, a collection of educational resources to help consumers understand what smart home technologies are available today and what benefits they might receive by using them.

The new toolkit includes the “Inside the Smart Home FAQ”, which provides consumers with detailed, but easy-to-understand answers for their top questions around smart home technology, and the smart home infographic, which provides an inside-the-home look at smart thermostats, electric vehicles, smart lighting and more.

SECC members also have access to social media images and sample social media posts to use in sharing the resources online. For access to these resources or for other communications needs, members are invited to contact SECC’s Communications Manager Jonathan Field.

Energy utilities in the U.S. are making significant strides in educating and engaging their customers about how to better control how much energy they use, the resulting costs they incur and the benefits of shifting their consumption. The case studies collected by the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative spotlight how smart meter/smart grid deployments by these utilities have engaged consumers to enable them to match the energy they use with their needs and lifestyles.


SMUD began serving Sacramento in 1946 and is now the nation’s sixth-largest community-owned electric utility with a service territory of over 900 square miles. SMUD’s commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 will lower the capital region’s overall carbon footprint by 64 percent and greatly improve local air quality.

After turning to customers for new product ideas, SMUD launched an e-commerce platform in October 2017 with a curated set of customer-requested products, including smart thermostats, connected home products, LED lighting, advanced power strips and more. Through September 2019, SMUD Energy Store has sold over $3 million in product, seen about 500,000 site visitors and maintained a customer satisfaction rate of 91 percent.

Industry experts detail what consumers want most around digital platforms for energy usage and what might be coming next

ATLANTA and WASHINGTON – Dec. 11, 2018 – As electricity providers become more customer-centric, they are increasingly offering residential energy consumers digital tools that offer experiences similar to popular consumer-facing technologies in online retail, banking and other industries. A new report released today by the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative (SECC) and the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) looks at the current state of these digital platforms, including online marketplaces and energy usage data tools. The report, “Consumer Platform of the Future: Industry Insider Perspectives,” also covers future trends industry experts see in this area and the key components that will make these solutions successful for end consumers.

The report was developed from 16 interviews with energy industry leaders – including electricity providers, technology vendors and consumer advocates – that were conducted as part of SECC’s “Consumer Platform of the Future” research, which was published in January 2018. While the initial “Consumer Platform of the Future” report, which was based on a nationally representative consumer survey, primarily focused on consumer interest in digital energy platforms, the aim of the new report is to share knowledge and lessons learned with other industry leaders as they plan and implement their own consumer platforms.

As such, the report provides a cohesive, working definition of a consumer platform, explains how these tools are commonly structured and showcases how utilities are using them to more actively engage customers in their energy use. Industry experts also shared their perspectives on several features that contribute to making a digital customer engagement tool successful. The most often cited features they said consumers want are easy-to-access and -understand information on options and recommendations and better control of their home energy usage.

The report also identifies several challenges utilities and solution providers face with wider adoption of digital customer engagement tools – such as working with existing regulatory rules and figuring out what it is that consumers want most – and offers several solutions and recommendations for each.
