Download a copy of the “Electric Vehicles: Driving the Customer Experience” report, which provides insight into consumers’ knowledge and attitudes about electric vehicles (EVs) as well as the experiences of current EV drivers.

The report is based on an online survey that was administered to 1,000 residential consumers in the United States in November 2021. The sample was boosted with an additional 750 respondents who currently own an EV.

The research explores owners’ satisfaction with their EVs, consumers’ top concerns around EVs, frequency and times of charging among owners, the top sources of information on EVs, interest in smart home devices and more.

With dozens of new electric vehicles (EVs) slated to be available in the next few years and rising interest among American consumers, we conducted the “Electric Vehicles: Driving the Customer Experience” research to provide industry stakeholders with insights on consumer knowledge and attitudes about EVs as well as the habits and experiences of current EV owners.

In this Research Brief Webinar on Tuesday, February 8 at 1 p.m. (ET), we will explore current owners’ satisfaction with their EVs, consumers’ top concerns around EVs, when owners tend to charge their vehicles, how consumers tend to get information on EVs and more. We will also share EV programs from electricity providers that have successfully engaged consumers.

Watch SECC’s Energy 101 videos, a series of one-minute educational videos designed to help consumers understand basic, yet important concepts related to energy today. These three videos focus on the importance of energy efficiency, the impact of weather on energy bills and the consumer benefits of beneficial electrification.

Download a copy of the “Beneficial Electrification: The Voice of the Consumer” study, which provides insights on how consumers think about beneficial electrification and climate change.

As electricity generation in the U.S. becomes increasingly cleaner, electrification is gaining momentum as a strategy to reduce carbon emissions and address climate change. This study reached a nationally representative sample of 1,200 Americans to gauge interest in switching to electricity, determine barriers that might exist and uncover underlying motivations for switching.

The study found considerable interest in switching to electricity for both residential use and for transportation. Over two-thirds (68 percent) of Americans believe it is important for their electric utilities to invest in electric vehicle charging stations, and 70 percent are open to electric water heating. SECC's Patty Durand joined by David Farnsworth, a principal with the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP), covered some of the insights from a new white paper on beneficial electrification along with additional considerations of beneficial electrification for residential consumers. Based on a series of interviews with industry leaders, the white paper provides an overview of the consumer risks and rewards related to beneficial electrification; the paper will be followed by a nationally representative consumer survey in early June.

Beneficial Electrification: Industry Views on Consumer Needs


Download a copy of SECC’s “Beneficial Electrification: Industry Views on Consumer Needs” study, which explores the role that electrification can play in addressing climate change and looks at the benefits that can potentially be delivered to residential consumers.

It was developed from a review of industry publications and in-depth interviews with 11 experts, including Jigar Shah, co-founder and president of Generate Capital; David Farnsworth, a principal with the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP); and Keith Dennis, vice president of consumer member engagement at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).

This is the first of two publications from SECC that will address beneficial electrification and residential consumers. The second publication is a quantitative study that offers insights from a nationally representative sample of consumers about their expectations, motivations, barriers and perceptions around beneficial electrification.
