We are quickly approaching the close of the nominations window for SECC's 2025 Best Practices Awards, a unique awards program that highlights leadership from electricity providers in developing consumer-centric programs, services and strategies. If you plan on submitting nominations for consideration, the deadline is Friday, November 1.

For the 2025 awards, we will again recognize providers in six categories, including the Energy Equity Award, which was introduced in 2022 to recognize initiatives that are advancing a more equitable energy system. The other categories are Consumer Education, Smart Energy Innovation, SMB Engagement, Consumer Engagement and Culture Transformation.

Following the end of the nominations window on Friday, November 1, all nominations will be reviewed by an independent advisory panel, and winners will be notified under embargo in December. We will recognize the winners at the 2025 Consumer Symposium, co-located with DISTRIBUTECH in Dallas.

The Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative (SECC) is excited to release a new paper, “Building Trust in the Energy Transition”, that highlights successful programs, services and strategies for residential customers centered around the key themes from the “2024 State of the Consumer” report.

The paper shares real-life examples from electricity providers (investor-owned, municipal and cooperative utilities) across the United States and Canada, such as Middle Tennessee Electric, SMUD, Hawaiian Electric, BC Hydro, ComEd, Puget Sound Energy and more.

Highlighted examples include no-cost energy efficiency upgrades for income-eligible customers, a heat pump rebate program, an electric vehicle (EV) charger installation program, a time-of-use (TOU) rate pilot program and a roadmap for improving service reliability.

Download the new white paper now to discover more than a dozen brief case studies on what’s working in the customer-centric energy transition. And if you still haven’t read the “2024 State of the Consumer” report yet, you can download that report here.

New Case Study: ComEd’s Powering Lives Resource Fairs

We’re excited to announce that a new case study – “Connecting Consumers in Need with Financial Assistance” – is now available for download. The latest case study covers the development of the Powering Lives Resource Fairs where ComEd customers could have in-person access to a customer service representative (CSR), review their recent bills and apply for financial assistance right on the spot.

Following a study on the barriers that disadvantaged and environmental justice communities face, ComEd began to rethink its customer-service approach. To effectively engage customers in historically marginalized communities, the company decided to host in-person resource fairs throughout its service territory, selecting four areas to host flagship events in 2023 alongside a nonprofit partner that was well-known within each community.

The goal of the Powering Lives Resource Fairs was to create a one-stop shop where customers could have in-person access to a ComEd customer service representative (CSR), review their recent bills and, ultimately, apply for financial assistance right on the spot. Customers could also access external services, including assistance from gas utility providers, health screenings (flu shots, COVID shots, blood pressure checks and more), food pantries to provide food to take home, rent and mortgage assistance and more.

The Powering Lives Resource Fairs have been effective in driving community engagement and removing barriers to convenient access to financial assistance. In 2023, a total of four fairs were held in the Woodlawn and Austin neighborhoods of Chicago, as well as in Ford Heights and Rockford, Illinois. Over 3,200 customers attended the fairs, and over one thousand customers connected to onsite bill assistance and energy-management programs.

With the addition of the new case study, there are now 44 success stories available in our archive from a wide range of electricity providers across the United States and Canada, including Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Ameren Illinois, Cobb EMC, London Hydro, AEP Ohio, NB Power and Consumers Energy.

Press Release

Latest survey in the Smart Energy Snapshot Series explores consumers’ familiarity with AI and studies consumer interest in ways electricity providers could use AI

Sixty-one percent of Americans believe that artificial intelligence (AI) systems will prove to be valuable for their household electricity usage, according to the latest survey from the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative (SECC), a nonprofit organization that studies Americans’ energy-related behaviors, interests and values. Among Americans who have experience with AI systems, such as ChatGPT and Midjourney, this figure rises to 76 percent.

The “Computing Consumer Interest in AI” survey – the latest installment in SECC’s Smart Energy Snapshot Series, which debuted in 2023 – was fielded to a nationally representative sample of 1,530 respondents in late June. As AI increasingly becomes part of the energy landscape and routinely makes national headlines, the survey sought to understand how consumers feel about this emerging technology and what their expectations are for its potential applications.

Americans expressed relatively high interest in potential AI services from their electricity providers, with proactive notifications about power outages/scheduled maintenance topping the list at 69 percent. Fifty-seven percent are interested in personalized recommendations for reducing their electricity usage, while about half expressed interest in personalized suggestions for reducing their carbon footprints and for the optimization of their usage via the control of smart home devices.

However, this interest doesn’t mean that Americans don’t have concerns around AI. First, the new Snapshot Survey revealed that many consumers question the accuracy of AI systems; only 12 percent believe that AI systems are very accurate, while an additional 47 percent think that they are somewhat accurate. For consumers who don’t have prior experience with AI systems, only six percent believe AI systems to be very accurate, and one-third think they are somewhat accurate.

Additionally, consumers have concerns regarding data privacy when utilizing AI systems related to their household electricity usage. About three-quarters of consumers (73 percent) expressed concern, with 38 percent saying that they are very concerned. Regardless of consumers’ familiarity and experience with AI systems, these levels of concern remained relatively consistent.

An infographic highlighting the key figures from the “Computing Consumer Interest in AI” survey can be viewed here, and a slide deck with the full survey findings is available exclusively for SECC’s membership here. In addition, we will be hosting a webinar on Tuesday, August 27 at 1 p.m. (ET) on the key findings of the survey with guest speakers from POWERCONNECT.AI and Bidgely.

New Case Study: NB Power’s Enhanced Energy Savings Program

July 10, 2024
Latest News

Topics
Case Study, Energy Efficiency

We’re excited to announce that a new case study – “Expanding Access to Energy Efficiency Upgrades” – is now available for download. The case study examines the improvement of an existing low-income energy efficiency program to address the growing energy poverty issue in New Brunswick, Canada.

In September 2022, the Government of New Brunswick provided NB Power with an additional $50 million to enhance the existing low-income program to help the provincial utility to assist substantially more consumers in improving their homes’ energy efficiency. The program enhancements included:

  • Increasing the income threshold to include moderate-income homeowners
  • Decreasing reliance on electric baseboard and oil heating with the addition of heat pumps
  • Enlisting a network of heat pump contractors
  • Keeping the home energy evaluation to ensure the proper upgrades were being completed
  • Simplifying the program offering

On September 28, 2022, the program updates were ready, and NB Power launched the Enhanced Energy Savings Program for low- and moderate-income homeowners. The comprehensive energy efficiency program aimed to provide relief from high energy costs and improve the comfort of their homes year-round.

Currently, approximately 6,890 homes have either completed or are in progress with their energy efficiency upgrades through the Enhanced Energy Savings Program. The success of the program’s first year has also prompted continued support from the province with a further $30 million in 2023/24 and $50 million in 2024/25 with a focus on eliminating wait lists for the popular program.

With the addition of the new case study, there are now over 40 success stories available in our archive from a wide range of electricity providers across the United States and Canada, including Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Ameren Illinois, Cobb EMC, London Hydro, AEP Ohio, ComEd and Consumers Energy.
