According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Spanish is now spoken at home by nearly 45 million Americans – more than twice as many as in 1990.

During this webinar, we will share the findings from our latest Snapshot Survey – “Don’t Leave Us in the Dark: Engaging Spanish-Speaking Households” – which explores Spanish speakers’ perceptions of their electricity providers, their struggles paying their electric bills, their support for renewable energy targets and more.

Building Trust in the Energy Transition


The “Building Trust in the Energy Transition” white paper highlights successful utility programs, services and strategies for residential customers centered around the three key themes explored in SECC’s “2024 State of the Consumer” report:

  1. Consumers demonstrate a strong affinity for the practical advantages of electricity, both at home and on the road.
  2. Consumers show signs of anxiety over cost and reliability.
  3. Consumers are poised to be active participants in grid modernization.

The paper shares real-life examples from electricity providers (investor-owned, municipal and cooperative utilities) across the United States and Canada, such as Middle Tennessee Electric, SMUD, Hawaiian Electric, BC Hydro, ComEd, Puget Sound Energy and several others.

Highlighted examples include no-cost energy efficiency upgrades for income-eligible customers, a heat pump rebate program, an electric vehicle (EV) charger installation program, a time-of-use (TOU) rate pilot program and a roadmap for improving service reliability.

Electricity providers in the U.S. and Canada are making strides in educating and engaging consumers on better controlling how much energy they use, the resulting costs they incur and the benefits of shifting their usage.

These case studies collected by the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative spotlight how smart energy technologies and programs have engaged consumers to empower them to match the energy they use with their needs.


ComEd is a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation, a Fortune 200 energy company with approximately 10 million electricity and natural gas customers – the largest number of customers in the U.S. ComEd powers the lives of more than four million customers across northern Illinois, or 70 percent of the state’s population. To do this, ComEd manages more than 90,000 miles of power lines in an 11,400-square-mile territory.

To effectively engage customers in historically marginalized communities, ComEd launched the Powering Lives Resource Fairs where customers could have in-person access to a ComEd customer service representative (CSR), review their recent bills and apply for financial assistance right on the spot.

The Powering Lives Resource Fairs have been effective in driving community engagement and removing barriers to convenient access to financial assistance. In 2023, a total of four fairs were held in the Woodlawn and Austin neighborhoods of Chicago, as well as in Ford Heights and Rockford, Illinois. Over 3,200 customers attended the fairs, and over one thousand customers connected to onsite bill assistance and energy-management programs.

Computing Consumer Interest in AI


As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly becomes part of the energy landscape, the “Computing Consumer Interest in AI” survey sought to understand how consumers feel about this emerging technology and gauge their expectations for potential applications. This Snapshot Survey explores consumers’ familiarity with AI and studies interest around ways electricity providers could use AI.

Fielded to a nationally representative sample of 1,530 respondents in late June, this survey found that 61 percent of Americans believe that AI systems will prove to be valuable for their electricity usage. Among Americans who have experience with AI systems, this figure rises to 76 percent. However, the survey also revealed concerns around data privacy and the accuracy of AI systems.

As New Brunswick, Canada’s power company, NB Power is responsible for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity that powers the homes, businesses and communities of more than 400,000 customers. NB Power is committed to enhancing New Brunswickers’ lives by providing clean, competitive and reliable energy solutions. Part of this commitment includes investments in energy efficiency programs, energy solutions, renewable energy sources and smart grid technology.

In September 2022, NB Power launched the Enhanced Energy Savings Program for low- and moderate-income homeowners in New Brunswick. The comprehensive energy efficiency program aimed to provide relief from high energy costs and improve the comfort of their homes year-round.

Currently, approximately 6,890 homes have either completed or are in progress with their energy efficiency upgrades through the Enhanced Energy Savings Program. The success of the program’s first year has also prompted continued support from the province with a further $30 million in 2023/24 and $50 million in 2024/25 with a focus on eliminating wait lists for the popular program.

Helping Renters Lower Their Energy Costs



Renters often face unique barriers to saving energy at home – their landlords or property managers may not allow them to make certain changes, and they usually don’t have the agency to make major upgrades to the HVAC, water heaters, etc. However, there are still many steps that they can take to lower their energy bills.

In this short educational video, we explore many of the actions that a renter can easily take, such as choosing a new electric rate plan, unplugging devices when not in use and using window treatments to their maximum advantage.

Download a copy of SECC’s “Understanding the SMB Landscape: New Needs and Concerns” report, which explores the energy-related needs of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) across the United States and provides recommended next steps for customer engagement.

Based on a 15-minute online survey of 750 energy decision-makers at businesses with fewer than 500 employees, the report found that 47 percent of SMBs characterize electricity as a “moderate” business expense, while an additional 18 percent say that it is a “large” expense.

In addition, the new survey found that there is significant interest in demand response and electrification – roughly three-quarters of SMBs say that they are interested in participating in a demand response program or switching non-electric business operations to electricity.

Finally, this research developed four new personas – Energized Enterprises, Opportunistic Organizations, Small & Satisfied and Entrenched Businesses – that can help highlight the key needs and priorities of SMB customers and provide insight into effective customer engagement strategies.
